Those here in Fairfield interested in black culture music and dance may wish to attend Monique Martin's Minty Fresh Circus that will be coming to Fairfield in mid-February.
The name Minty in the show's title pays homage to abolitionist Harriet Tubman as her childhood nickname was Minty. The U.S. based circus is composed of seven all-black cast members, three staff and crew and a mostly black creative team. The show is presented in eight rituals incorporating dance skills with circus arts (juggling, aerial, and contortion) that revolve around the question "what does freedom feel & sound like if your only access to it is through your imagination?"
The music reflects movement and dance originating from the African Diaspora in an Afro-futuristic vibe and includes ritual movement, percussive dance, hip-hop, Lindy, junkin', poppin' & lockin', physical theater, and hand games. The recorded music is driving with compositions from Corey Action and Soul Science Lab.
The audience will be enticed to join in the call-and-response structure that is part of Black culture.
Programs for events like this are often printed weeks in advance at local Print shops.
Tickets will be $5 for Fairfield University students, $15 for Quick members and $25 for adults.
The Minty Fresh Circus will take place at the Fairfield University Quick Center for the Arts, 1073 N Benson Road, Sunday February 22nd starting at 7:00 pm and will last around 1 hour.
