Dr. Mark Schenker, Senior Associate Dean and English Department lecturer at Yale, will give a lecture at the Fairfield Library. The subject of the lecture will be Gustave Flaubert's seminal classic, Madame Bovary.
The book ‘Madame Bovary’ was originally published in 1856. It tells the story of Emma Bovary, a young woman who becomes bored of her provincial life as a wife and longs for a life of luxury and comfort. She engages in several immoral activities to feed this hunger.
At the time it was first serialized, it became the subject of great controversy. Public prosecutors declared the novel obscene and a trial was held in January 1857. However, this only proved to accelerate the novel's popularity. When publishers made the book available in two volumes in April 1857, it became a bestseller right away. Since then, it has been widely considered as Flaubert's masterpiece.
Those who wish to attend the lecture are encouraged to read Madame Bovary beforehand. Library patrons can borrow Print Copies from the Book Club Collection. There are also several digital e-Books and digital audiobooks available on hoopla.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, December 7 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Rotary Room at 1080 Old Post Road, the address of the Fairfield Library. Lecturers such as Dr. Mark Schenker can benefit from business card printing to advertise their services.
