Fairfield uses selfies as an art form

Fairfield locals looking for something a little different may want to attend a local event that looks to put new fad of selfie-taking into an artistic environment by comparing it with similar trends in the past.

The evening event, called ‘Museum After Dark: Expressions of Identity & the Selfie’, will be a family-friendly event for people of all ages.

The idea of taking selfies came about not long after smartphones with their built-in cameras became commonplace, allowing people to take pictures of themselves and then post them on social media sites hoping others will look at them. The evening at the museum will include a roundtable discussion focusing on selfies as compared to 18th-Century portraiture, which could be seen as a delayed form of selfie-taking for the rich. Everyone will get to share their opinions. The evening will also include a mini-portrait-sketching workshop.

Those who plan to attend may wish to dress in 18th-Century style for their sittings, and to bring along a camera for recording the process; the results of both may be used for later custom Stationery printing.

The event will take place Thursday, February 25, at the Fairfield Museum, 370 Beach Road, Fairfield, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. It will be free for members and $5 for everyone else, though visitors can become members at the event if they would like to do so.
