Loveland activity introduces marvels of moths

Loveland residents who enjoy learning about nature are reminded to make room in their summer schedule for an activity that will introduce them to some local night fliers.

The High Plains Environmental Center provides lots of ways to learn about nature, and it has an activity in store that will explore the practice of “skyfishing” for moths. It will be ticketed activity, and will be facilitated by the venue's Senior Manager Lepidopterist.

The session, which is set to take place outdoors after dark, will use the technique known as lightsheeting to attract and observe a wide assortment of species of moths, which tend to be most active at night and can be attracted with a bright light. The facilitator will demonstrate how to set up a light and surface for the moths to land on, and other flying insects may be spotted as well. This practice is also known as mothing and sky fishing.

Offering the public a chance to learn more about the natural world can be helpful in creating a new crop of environmental stewards. ID charts, field guides, data recording sheets and other custom designed materials for a function can be ordered from area Print shops that provide options for in house graphic design work.

This introduction to Loveland’s night life will be on offer on July 31st. It will start at 6:00 pm.
