Castle Rock ornithophiles and other bird lovers will certainly be flocking to the three Basics of Birdwatching events coming in May.
Starting out on Wednesday, May 1st, Barabara Spagnuolo, the Town's Natural Resource Specialist, will hold a one-hour Basics of Birdwatching indoor birdwatching class for beginners. She will discuss topics such as bird identification, choosing and using field guides and binoculars and locating local birding spots. This free part-one class will run from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Philip & Jerry Miller Library, 100 S Wilcox Street.
The following Wednesday, May 8th, from 8:00 am to 10:00 am, Ms. Spagnuolo will take hikers on the East Plum Creek Trail to look for forest and grassland birds. Guests must bring their own binoculars. Although this hike is a chance for those attending the prior class to advance their birding skills, everyone is invited to attend whether they attended the class or not.
Those who attended the Basic of Birdwatching class will get one more opportunity to work on their skills at the last May Birdwatching Guided Hike on Saturday the 18th from 7:30 am to 9:30 am. This hike, again guided by Ms. Spagnuolo will take them in the Gateway Mesa Open Space, 4678 E. Highway 86.
