The 13th Annual SPEAK Walk will soon be taking place in Brighton to promote healthy mental health practices in the area.
The Suicide Prevention Education Awareness and Knowledge (SPEAK) walk aims to serve as a platform to educate the participants on different mental health issues and prevent teen suicide. This initiative was born after the tragic death of Joshua Dillion, a senior at Brighton High School, in 2011. Its primary goal is to tackle societal taboos associated with mental health issues in that often see victims unwilling to seek the help they need.
The walk that will be held at Carmichael Park on Saturday, May 4th, The week leading up to the walk, known as SPEAK Week, encompasses a series of educational activities offered to the participating 27J Schools.
This year's Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) training will be held on 29th April at 10.00 am and 6.00 pm, and on 1st May at 6.00pm at the Brighton City Hall. These 75-minute QPR courses will focus on topics including how to ask for help for somebody who may be in a mental health crisis.
Upon registration, participants will get a swag bag, a T-shirt, a SPEAK candle, and other mental health resources that may include Brochures, Flyers, and contact information for professionals in the area.
