Vallejo hosts exhibit on submarines

A new exhibit at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum features the submarines built at Vallejo’s Mare Island as well as many artifacts from the Navy from the museum’s collection, photographs, artwork, and video and audio.

Scott Stick and Paul Goodwin curated the exhibit. Stick created many of the audio recordings, which guests can access via QR codes. These are stories of the experiences of those who worked in the submarines. Stick said he also interviewed people who worked on Mare Island to learn more about how these people, their work, and the submarines helped Vallejo and the country.

Such exhibits will often use flyer printing to promote them throughout a community.

Trevor Allen, the executive director of the museum, said that a previous director, Jim Kern, had started working on the exhibit in 1999 and Allen took it up when he started his position at the museum in 2018. Allen said the plan was to open the exhibit sometime this year. Allen thanked the board of directors of the museum for their support as well as those at the Mare Island Museum which was a partner in this exhibit.

This exhibit will be in the main hall and run through Saturday September 14. Once the exhibit closes it will become a living exhibit on the website of the museum.
