Youth jazz festival on way to Sacramento

The Teagarden Jazz Festival will be coming to Sacramento next February for the enjoyment of scholastic performances. Students from elementary, middle, and high schools as well as colleges from Lancaster will want to participate in this event.

This festival is designed to foster an appreciation of classic jazz in the style of New Orleans. It provides an opportunity for young musicians to gather for experiences that will bring a new level to their musical abilities. Typically, small ensembles of four to nine musicians perform at a time. Members of the ensembles need to be 22 years of age or younger of enrolled in a minimum of six college credits.

Events such as this are often promoted throughout an area with banner printing.

This is the 15th year of the festival. Performances begin Friday evening with a concert at the Rio American High School in Sacramento. Saturday’s activities include a jazz workshop, a jam session, clinics, performances, and awards.

The director of the festival is Steven Roach with Yvonne Au as the coordinator. Other members of the committee include Kathy and Dave Becker who handle admissions and raffle sales; Marty Mahoney and Nora Stanfill who handles hospitality; and Ron Jones, guest artist.

The festival will take place on Friday February 7 and Saturday February 8 and is sponsored by the Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation.
