Construction has begun on the new Sustainable Energy Project in Vacaville. This project demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the city to sustainability and is an important step towards a future of cleaner energy.
The Vacaville City Council approved this project last year. The city will partner with ENGIE U.S. to complete the $20 million solar project. Eight facilities in the city will see the installation of solar photovoltaic systems and will include City Hall, Fire Stations 71 and 75, McBride Senior Center, Three Oaks Community Center, and Andrews Park. The last three will be the location for the first phase of construction, resulting in parking for visitors at these sites.
It is expected that the cost savings in utilities from this construction will pay for the project and will generate a net savings of close to $24 million over the next 25 years for the General Fund. Close to three megawatts of new, renewable power will be generated from the solar photo-voltaic systems and over 2,900 megatons of carbon dioxide emissions will be avoided.
Additional benefits from this project will be a contribution to the downtown mural project of the city, paid internships through a workforce development partnership with Solano Community College, and 327 new trees planted throughout the city.
