The Vacaville Parks and Recreation Department will be holding a course this fall on learning American Sign Language (ASL).
The classes will be held online and are geared for children eight years of age and older, although adults are also able to take the course. There will be a Level One and a Level Two course. The Level One course will cover the basics of ASL, including numbers, the alphabet, and a vocabulary of over 150 words. The topics to be covered in the Level Two course have not been disclosed. Both courses will be taught by Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA) instructor.
Such special courses are often promoted throughout a community with banner printing.
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is promoting the learning of ASL at an early age as it can improve a child’s social, cognitive, and language development, and enable them to establish better communication with caregivers.
Both classes will begin on Wednesday, October 7 and last until Wednesday, November 18, with the exception of Wednesday, October 28. The Level One class will run from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. followed by the Level Two class from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Registration is required; the fee is $71.15 for nonresidents and $62 for residents, with a maximum class size of 25 each.
