Vacaville group invites young women to apply for award

Applicants from the area are being sought by a program that recognizes young women who have made the world and their community a better place.

Soroptimist International of Vacaville, a volunteer and worldwide organization dedicated to improving the lives of girls and women, is presenting the award. Print shops are often hired to create mailers and other materials to generate interest in applying for such awards.

Young women between the ages of 14 and 19 will be recognized with the Violet Richardson Award. This award has been given to those who have voluntarily fought violence and crime and the use of illegal drugs; have worked to end poverty and discrimination; and helped disadvantaged people and cleaned up the environment.

A winner or winners of the award can receive up to $1,500, along with a further $1,500 to be donated to a charity of their choice.

The award is named for the president of the first Soroptimist club which was established in 1921. Richardson was a believer in personal responsibility and was active in her community, committed to creating opportunities for young women and girls. Soroptimist International established this award to honor her dedication to the work of volunteers and to honor her memory.

Soroptimist International of Vacaville needs to receive applications for the award by Sunday, November 15.
