A new public art installation will be coming to the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance South Bay.
The mural, titled “Samurai of the Diamond,” is done by Robert Vargas, an internationally recognized muralist, who is known for his iconic and large-scale works in the Los Angeles area and around the world. This mural will celebrate international connections, the love of Dodgers baseball, and some of its most popular athletes.
Highlighted in the mural will be the meaningful connection between Japan, baseball, and the community of Torrance, which is proud of a relationship of over 50 years with Kashiwa, Japan and more recent friendships with the cities of Bizen and Oshu, Japan as well as its overall rich Japanese American heritage. These are the hometowns of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani, members of the Dodgers, who are shown on the mural.
George K. Chen, mayor of Torrance, said this more than as it is a celebration of what the city is. He added that this project has the potential to increase tourism, energize the economic landscape of the city, and further establish Torrance as a cultural destination in the region.
News of such murals on display in a city and their ramifications for a city can be made known with flyer printing.
The mural is scheduled to be unveiled on Tuesday March 24.
