Torrance mall getting new look

Del Amo Fashion Center is getting a facelift. The mall, once the largest in the country, has been given an infusion of more than $200m of investment from Simon Property Group for renovations and upgrades.

Shoppers interested in getting a preview of how the redevelopment will look can get a sneak peek by stopping by the nearly completed Patio Cafes. Gone is the crowded food court formerly located in the mall’s interior.

Patio Cafes is elevated over Carson Street and features big skylights, a natural green wall of live plants, bright tiles, and seating for 700. Lindsay Hermance, director of marketing and business development, is upbeat about the changes, saying:

“It definitely gives you a good idea of what you’re going to see throughout [the mall].

“One of the things we really wanted to do was have the feeling of bringing the outdoors in.”

Of the 10 planned for Patio Cafes, six are open and the other four are expected to start serving this summer.

If the Del Amo renovations have the intended effect, surrounding businesses should definitely see an uptick in foot traffic. Be it a vendor offering flyer printing services and Stationery printing, or a gift store filled with souvenirs, more shoppers are a welcome development.

Thus far, patrons are responding with positive comments. Becky Ruiz, manager of a nearby T.J. Maxx, described the work as “with the times”.
