Torrance center named after longtime volunteer advocate

A building in Torrance that serves as the headquarters for the Volunteer Center for South Bay/Long Beach/Harbor has been named after someone who has gone above and beyond in his drive to help others.

De De Hicks, who is retiring after many years of service as the organization’s CEO and President, was recently honored for work by having the building named after her. She served in her position for almost 30 years.

Hicks was the leader when it came to the $1.2m effort to take a historic building in Torrance that had seen better days, and bring it back to life as the new home for the group. Letterheads can be specially designed and printed that reflect the address and name of the upgraded building. These can be used for both the group’s everyday and special correspondence, depending on what type of bond paper is used.

One of the mandates of organization she helped to make a success is to pair those looking to volunteer with community not-for-profits looking for some helping hands. To further help honor Hicks, nearly $300,000 was raised to help make sure the initiatives she began will keep going. These include Food For Kids, Operation Teddy Bear, volunteer development for teens, and a scholarship program that will help them pay for their higher education.
