One of the first cities selected by the governor of California to launch efforts to create more affordable housing will be Stockton. This housing will be built on land which is owned by the state and considered to be excess.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state will partner with the city to build over 100 housing units for middle-class and low-income residents on a vacant 0.85 acre of land in the downtown deemed by the state to be suitable for affordable housing. At least half of these units need to be designated as affordable to those who earn 80% or less of the median income in the area.
Bids from developers have already been submitted and the developers of the project will be determined next month. The state will oversee the project and the developers will own, build, and manage the project.
Banner printing can be used at such sites so residents will be informed of such projects and kept abreast of their progress.
Michael Tubbs, mayor of Stockton, expressed his pleasure in receiving the news of this partnership and said that it demonstrated how state and local governments can work together to assist with housing needs. The city had asked the state for help and the governor had been able to move quickly, and provide state resources to support the city.
