Construction begins on corridor project in Stockton

Ground has been broken on the East Channel Street Streetscape and Connectivity Project in Stockton, the goal of which is to improve accessibility and safety in downtown Stockton.

A segment of East Channel Street will be reconstructed as part of the project, with new lighting, widened sidewalks, pavement upgrades, and bike lanes. Officials from the city said that the work will address longstanding deficiencies in infrastructure and will improve connections between the transportation hub of Stockton and surrounding communities.

The project will also include irrigation sleeves, amended soil for tree wells, ramps that are ADA compliant, and plans for traffic control that will maintain access for driveways and pedestrians throughout each phase of the project.

Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of projects and their benefits for a community.

Mayor Christina Fugazi said that the project has been planned for several years and reflects broader efforts by the city to modernize infrastructure. The mayor added that the goal is to make Stockton a clean, safe, and healthy city in every block.

Several entities have collaborated to make this project possible, including Visionary Home Builders, the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, the city of Stockton, and other non-profit and public partners. Funding for the project has come from contributions from the region and the state, as well as the Affordable Sustainable Communities program.
