Ground has been broken for the construction of Grand View Village in Stockton. This will be an affordable housing project offering 75 units.
Chief Executive Officer of Visionary Home Builders (VHB), Carol Ornelas, said the housing project took five years to get funded, but the organization, which is a non-profit in Stockton for purpose-built housing, was persistent in its efforts. It has received $37 million in funding from the city of Stockton and the state for the project.
Buildings that have been vacant on the site for many years will be demolished in order to build units with one, two, and three bedrooms. The housing is designed for families who earn between 30 to 80 percent of the median income in the area. The project is located between Hunter and San Joaquin streets. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the community of projects getting underway and to keep them informed of their progress.
There will be a community center, offices, and commercial spaces in the ground floor of the building. Head Start, which is offered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services and provides parent involvement services, health and nutrition, and early childhood education to low income families, will be on the first floor.
It is expected that the project will take a year and a half to build.
