Stockton approves extension of anti-crime tax measure

A 0.75% sales and transactions tax known as Measure A has been approved by the Stockton City Council to extend for another 10 years. It was set to expire on March 31, 2024.

Measure A is a tax measure providing funds for crime prevention and law enforcement. It was originally approved by the voters of Stockton in November 2013, and its funds have been used to help the city restore several essential services for public safety that had been eliminated about 10 years ago.

News of such votes and their benefit for a city is often made known with flyer printing.

The tax was able to be renewed as the council held two public hearings last month and earlier this month that demonstrated that the tax was still needed and that the compensation for city employees was not excessive. Dan Wright, a member of Stockton City Council, said the tax was a lifesaver for the city. He added that the city has been able to hire hundreds of police officers and this tax has been able to address attrition in other areas.

Harry Black, the city manager, said that Moss Adams, the auditor for the city, has proposed a set of procedures which have been agreed upon that will ensure that most of the money collected from this tax will go back to the Stockton Police Department.
