Five different states are competing to host a new Tesla battery factory that could create as many as 6,000 jobs in the local economy, and competition is fierce. Of the states, ABC30 reports that California officials are touting one city in the Valley as a perfect location.
The factory, anticipated to cost around $5bn, could have a huge effect on the local economy, from construction jobs to create the factory, to printing services for all the needs of the new company, as well as the other likely business-to-business services that would come as a result.
According to Adam Gray, a State Assembly representative, Patterson City in Stanislaus County could be perfect. The city has recently opened several large industrial buildings, including an Amazon fulfillment center with a footprint of a million square feet, and still has available space on Interstate 5.
Rod Butler, Patterson City Manager, said that the city was becoming an employment center for the region just by having the facilities it has already opened. Residents as far away as Stockton have stated that they are watching developments.
Tesla is also in the process of opening a smaller facility in Lathrop, but fewer details have been revealed to do with it. Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and New Mexico, are all considered finalists as locations for the large plant.
