A plan is underway to transform the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton into affordable housing.
This is a project that is part of the Excess Land for Affordable Housing Executive Order of Governor Gavin Newsom. The plan would be to take 110 acres of the total 250 acres of the land at the fairgrounds and develop mixed use and affordable housing. Local Print shops may be involved in creating Banners and other materials to inform the community of such developments.
Kevin Lincoln, mayor of Stockton, said this is a large investment and expressed his excitement about the project. He added that it will lead to more economic opportunities in the area as there could potentially be the investment of additional recreational and commercial activities in the area.
Head of Central Valley Low Income Housing a non-profit in Stockton, Bill Mendelson, applauded this effort on the part of the state. He said that homelessness may still be an issue but having more affordable housing will help address some of the housing issues in the city.
A qualifications-based selection process will be used to find a developer. This will enable the developer to use a tailored and flexible approach to gather input from the civic leaders, the local community, and stakeholders to create a project that will best serve the needs of the city and make best use of the fairgrounds.
