The new Expanse supercomputer at the University San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at University of California San Diego is now in service, and will be supporting many scientific applications including public clouds, edge computing, and experimental facilities. Michael Norman, Director of the SDSC, said that new technologies and innovations, as well as increased support from the Open Science Grid, have provided researchers with increased computing capabilities that enable them to reduce their time to discovery. He added that Expanse can now support composable systems, which integrate many computing resources and devices into scientific workflows that include machine learning, simulation, and data acquisition, and processing. As Expanse is integrated with public cloud providers, high-speed networks can be leveraged to facilitate the movement of data to and from the cloud. Print shops are often hired to create mailers and other printed materials, with details about the uses of such devices.
Expanse was created by Dell Computers and comprises 13 computing units connected with a high-speed backbone. It is cooled with by direct liquid cooling, which contributes to its energy-efficient properties and improves system reliability. Next year, a new file system will be added to support data sharing, complex workflows, and staging to and from external sources.
