Sorrento Valley cyclists get ready to ride

Bicycle and running enthusiasts are gearing up for the 31st Annual Scripps Ranch Old Pros Fourth of July Run and Ride. The event features a variety of physical activity to celebrate Independence Day.

The cycling has three different options depending on the fitness level of the rider. The 50-mile course runs through Mira Mesa, Sorrento Valley, Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Del Dios Highway, Rancho Bernardo, and Scripps Ranch and is considered an extreme challenge suitable for cyclists in top condition. For dedicated cyclists looking for a good workout there is a 28-mile ride. For families and casual riders, a 12-mile course is also available. All riders get a commemorative t-shirt bearing the Logo Design of the event, and at the end of the rides there will be a drawing for prizes. It is not a race, however, so no prizes will be given out for finish times.

The running portion involves a 10k race around Miramar Lake which offers a trophy, the Ron McElliott Cup, to the top male and female finisher overall as well as medals for the top three finishers in each division. A two-mile fun run will also be staged for families in Hoyt Park. All participants in the runs will also receive a t-short and are eligible for the prize drawing.

The Fourth of July Run and Ride will be held on July 4 starting at 7:00 a.m. at Hoyt Park, located at 10158 Aviary Dr. Registration varies by event and ranges from $25 to $55.
