Sorrento Valley area workshop to focus on food sustainability

A Sorrento Valley area event will give members of the public an opportunity to learn more about how they can contribute to the development of a sustainable food system right in their own community.

The workshops, which will include hands-on learning, will see participants visit the field lab at Wild Willow Farms. The series of three events will focus on crops that do well in the cooler winter months, including beets, okra, and sweet potatoes.

During each of the classes, the students will discover the history of each of the plants and how they have been used as food crops for humans. After this, they will learn about how to cultivate them, right from how to start the seeds to the process of harvesting and storing them for later use. There will be a discussion of fertilization requirements, pest control and a variety of other topics that can help to get the most from each crop.

Along with the cultivation portion of the event, there will also be a cooking demonstration of an assortment of recipes. The participants are asked to bring along a dish that features the vegetable that is the focus of the class for a pot luck lunch. Newsletter printing can be used to craft community bulletins that let the public know when a learning opportunity like this will be taking place.

The workshops will be held on February 24, March 3 and March 10. They will take place at San Diego’s Wild Willow Farm, and more information can be found on its website.
