These funds are to be used to expand the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program (CASP) which provides extensive support services and financial aid to low income, high achieving students in California, a large number of whom are first-generation college students. This program may be of interest to such students in the neighboring Sorrento Valley.
These funds will match gifts that are eligible for the CASP on a one-to-one basis by Brian and Paula Powers. The Powers have supported CASP and UC San Diego for a number of years prior to this gift. They are deeply personally connected to the program's mission. Paula Powers said:
“My parents and grandparents did not go to college — in fact, only one of my grandparents finished high school. I remember what it was like to step onto a college campus without knowing how anything worked.”
News of such funding and its wide-ranging benefits can be made known throughout a community with flyer printing.
Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said that “the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program, which has provided access to UC San Diego for over 2,900 deserving students, is a point of pride for the campus.” He expressed his gratitude to the Powers for their belief and vision in the importance of education and supporting students of all backgrounds and will transform many lives.
