The second phase of the Del Mar Reconfiguration project of San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) is now underway.
The goal of this project is to improve the reliability and safety of the electric system, and it will remove 35 transmission lines from the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, Los Penasquitos Lagoon, and the San Diego Lagoon. About six miles off overhead transmission lines will also be removed in the Sorrento Valley area.
In addition, SDG&E will convert about three-quarters of a mile of overhead power lines to underground line and remove five wood poles along Racetrack View Drive and San Dieguito Drive in Del Mar. SDG&E will also remove two existing wood poles and convert close to 630 feet of overhead distribution lines that currently exist to underground lines along the path for pedestrians near the Penasquitos Lagoon.

The third phase will remove a transmission line six miles long and accompanying transmission poles. This line begins on Via de la Valle at the Del Mar Substation and extends across the San Dieguito Lagoon to Racetrack View Drive. Residential neighborhoods near the Los Penasquitos Lagoon and the State National Reserve at Torrey Pines and Interstate 5 parallel the line and end at Sorrento Valley Road.
September is the expected start date for the third phase.
