The Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee of the City Council of San Diego has made it possible to address a budget deficit of $250 million and a comprehensive reform package for parking in the city. This may be of interest to those in the Sorrento Valley area who work in the city.
Kent Lee, a council member from District 6, said the intent is to better align with parking rates in the region and throughout the state while at the same time maximizing revenue for the city.
One proposal being considered is to end free parking on Sundays except for those within a given neighborhood who would get a permit that would enable them to park at no cost on a Sunday. Another proposal is dynamic parking that could cost as much as $20 an hour. Stephen Whitburn, another council member, said that the city would then be able to increase the cost of parking when there is high demand, for example, during a special event. Another option being considered is adding meters in neighborhoods to increase turnover and to extend the hours of metered parking.
Local Print shops can help inform residents about such proposals with Flyers and other printed materials.
April 15 is when the budget proposal from the mayor will be released which will include other revenue streams. The city council will more closely examine parking proposals in May.
