New residences and student center in Sorrento Valley area

The University of California at San Diego (UCSD) is beginning construction on a residential village with 2,400 beds and a student union that will become the campus’s social center. This will surely be of interest to those in nearby Sorrento Valley.

The residential village will be known as Ridge Walk North Living and Learning Neighborhood. It will provide administrative and teaching space for the school’s Department of Economics, the School of Global Policy and Strategy, and the Thurgood Marshall College. There will be four buildings, one of which will be 18 stories high.

This project is part of an effort by the university to add close to 5,700 beds by late 2025 or early 2026. UCSD will then be able to house over 24,000 students, making it the country’s largest residential university.

Services such as academic resources, student health, a welcome and alumni center, and an event space that can hold 500 people will be offered in the Triton Center. Flyers created by local Print shops can provide more information about such services to be offered.

The two projects, at a cost of close to $1bn, will create a central gathering spot for students, help to meet an increased demand for housing at the university. The student population is almost 43,000 and is expected to grow by 7,000 over the next 10 years.
