The Federal Railroad Administration will be awarding the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) up to $8m to replace a wooden bridge near Sorrento Valley at Rose Canyon.
The bridge was built in 1917 and has a structure made of concrete that is sufficiently wide to accommodate a second set of tracks.
Updating and adding a second set of tracks to the bridge is part of continuing efforts to improve the coastal railroad corridor that runs from San Luis Obispo to San Diego through Los Angeles. Director of engineering and construction for SANDAG, Sharon Humphreys, expressed her thrill in getting this funding and said that improving the capacity, reliability, and safety of this corridor is a top priority. Travelers along such routes can be notified of such planned improvements with flyer printing.
A new release stated that as there is significant daily traffic from commuter, freight, and intercity services along this coastal railroad corridor, the new bridge will keep conditions along the frequently used railway safe and help to maintain its economic vitality.
The funding is part of $46.4m from the federal government for railroad projects in California. A 42% match with the grant will be provided by the North County Transit District and SANDAG.
Construction on the bridge is expected to begin in August 2023.
