The San Ramon Arts Foundation will be presenting its Friday Foreign Film series next month.
The series will be held at the Dougherty Station Community Arts Center in The Front Row Theater. This year, the focus of the series will be on cinema from Asia, with films from countries including Vietnam and Japan. There will be a group conversation led by a moderator after each screening.
Such unique film series are often promoted throughout a community with poster printing.
The price to view an individual film is $12 and $44 for the series of four films. Each screening and conversation will run from 7:00pm to 9:30pm.
The first film will be “Rashomon” from Akira Kurosawa, a legendary Japanese filmmaker. The film relates the story of a crime from the perspective of a woodcutter, a ghost, a bandit, and a bride. This film won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It runs 98 minutes and will be shown on Friday, February 2.
The next film will be “Scent of the Green Papaya” and originates from Vietnam. This film is from the perspective of a servant girl who observes the lives of wealthy families in Saigon. This film has won the Caméra d’Or’ prize at the Cannes Film Festival. It runs 104 minutes, is in Vietnamese with English subtitles, and will be on Friday, February 9.
