A team of 17 high school students that included seven students from San Ramon have qualified for the FIRST Robotics World Championships to be held in Houston later this week.
The newly formed Mechanical Magicians team has been set up to offer hands-on learning in areas of science, technology, engineering, and math to a wide range of students. The team participated in the Monterey Bay Regional FIRST Robotics semi-finals competition where it won the Rookie All Star Award. Mechanical Magicians created a four-feet tall robot weighing 124 pounds that it worked on every weekend at Robot Garden, a non-profit community makerspace located at the Livermore Airport hangar.
The team is now engaged in fundraising efforts so it can attend Houston’s FIRST World Championships in Houston where, it is expected there will be 600 or more teams from around the world attending and competing. The team needs to raise $13,000 to cover the costs of attendance, registration, and shipping, and has launched a GoFundMe page.
Participating in such competitions can bring recognition to a community. This can present an opportunity for local Print shops to create Flyers and other materials to promote such teams and their fundraising efforts.
The first event in which the team participated was the San Francisco Regional competition, where it placed third and also went home with the Rookie Inspiration Award.
