Overcrossing in San Ramon now open

The Iron Horse Trail Pedestrian and Bicycle Overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon is now open.

Among the benefits of the new overcrossing are that it improves safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, reduces vehicle emissions and improves the flow of traffic, encourages bicyclists and pedestrians to use the Iron Horse Trail, and increases use of the trail by schools in the area, thereby improving safety at the Bollinger Canyon Road intersection.

Brochure printing can be used to highlight such benefits when important projects become open to the public, explaining them in a visual way.

The San Ramon Valley Bicycle Pedestrian Corridor Concept Plan was approved by the city in 2009. This studied the feasibility of integrating overcrossings for pedestrians and bicycles along the Iron Horse Trail and at major intersections with the trail. Preliminary design and community outreach for this project was completed in 2015, and a conceptual design for the bridge was selected. The final design was approved in April 2019, and groundbreaking was held in May 2023.

External sources covered more than 82% of the funding for this project, including grants from the Tri-Valley Transportation Commission, the Transportation for Livable Communities Program and One Bay Area of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and funding from the Contra Costa Transportation Authority.
