An annual tradition over 100 years old is returning to the local community in early June.
The San Leandro Cherry Festival was established in 1909 as a way for the community members to celebrate where the city has been, where it is now, and where it could be headed.
The event combines a parade, games, live music, vendors, and a baking competition focused on cherry pies. Later additions include a pie eating competition and a showcase of classic cars.
Participants in the parade and pie contests have a chance to win awards, with the parade having 10 categories, and the baking contest selecting a top three in two of its categories and just one winner in the other. The eating competition also only gives out one award.
The vendors offer a variety of products from local businesses and crafters. Beverages and food are available in a “beer garden” and as a part of the “Cherry Market.” Fresh cherries will also be offered for sampling. Attendees can earn prizes from games within the “Fun Zone.”
Attending the festival is free. Flyer printing is a common form of advertisement among the organizers of festivals and other community centric events. The venue is W. Estudillo Ave. The parade takes place before the rest of the festival, from 10:00am to 11:00am. The main event will go on from 11:00am to 6:00pm. The date for this year’s festival is June 1st.
