Last year, a playground in Golden Gate Park was vandalized, but now the city is getting ready to repair the facility. The playground is located in the Koret Children's Quarter of the park, and was once known as the Sharon Quarter. The park first opened in 1888, and features a carousel built by the Herschell-Spillman Company in 1914. About 40% of the playground was destroyed, with repairs estimated to be in the neighborhood of $1 million.
San Francisco's parks department has been in touch with a contractor who is willing to repair the playground, but there is no date yet for the work to start, or an estimate of how long it will take. No contract for the work has yet been finalized.
A private group known as the San Francisco Parks Alliance has been raising money to help with the repairs, and is still accepting donations; their office is on Mission Street.
The Koret area of the park is referred to by the parks department as a space that blends old and new. The old includes things like the carousel, which is only one of several that have stood in the park since the 1800s; the newer attractions include a climbing wall, and concrete slides that are loved despite their abrasive qualities.
Projects like this can benefit if officials work with a flyer printing company to create a residents’ mailer, updating them about the effort.
