Thomas Lauderdale founded Pink Martini in 1994 in Portland, Oregon, as an antidote to the boring music played at political events. A pianist, Lauderdale put classical music, pop, jazz, and world music into the mix, founding the “little orchestra” known as Pink Martini. It was his aim to improve the “elevator music” used at these events but instead he created an international musical sensation.
Later he got in touch with his Harvard classmate, China Forbes, asking her to join the group. She relocated and they began writing music, composing “Sympathetique,” their first single, which was a hit in France, winning a nomination for “Song of the Year” at the country’s Victoires de la Musique Awards.
The membership of Pink Martini fluctuates between 10 and 12 musicians who, although they are monolingual, can sing in as many as 15 separate languages. They have appeared around the world, performing throughout the Middle East, Türkiye, Greece, Asia, Europe, and more. They have appeared with more than 50 orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A review says:
“Amazing concert! The vocals were exquisite, the instrument playing very melodic and refined. Pink Martini is the definition of really good music.”
Pink Martini will appear at The Masonic in San Francisco on December 6. Colorful Posters, which organizers will find at Print shops, can advertise events like this.
