A punk rock band that has created a mythology about their origins is coming to San Francisco.
Agent 51 formed in 1995 in Poway, a suburb of San Diego. They released three albums early in their career: 1998’s “Red Alert,” “Just Keep Runnin’,” released in 2000; and “The Red & the Black,” also released in 2000. The band was part of the punk scene that was developing in Poway at the time, and included groups like Unwritten Law and Blink-182. In 2005, they went on hiatus, occasionally playing shows between 2008 and 2022, and then they reunited and became active again in 2023.
The band created a mythological background for themselves, hinting that they are secret agents running from a secret government organization connected to extraterrestrials. They play the part, wearing black suits during performances. They originally called themselves Area 51, but other groups were using the name, so they settled on Agent 51 instead.
In 2023, after reuniting on occasion, Agent 51 went back into the studio and released the singles “Going for the Vault,” “Mystifying,” “Let Me Go,” and “Tear It All Down.” They went on to do a live show in 2024 in San Diego, and decided to release a new album. That effort, “Age of Validation,” dropped in June 2025.
Agent 51 will be at the Great American Music Hall on January 3. Events like this are often publicized with Posters, which organizers can find at Print shops.
