San Francisco to keep libraries open all week

According to a recent announcement from city officials, all the libraries in the San Francisco Public Library systems will be open seven days each week. In order to create the new schedule, nine branches will be open for an extra day, while others add additional hours.

The libraries that are adding another day are Potrero, Parkside, Ocean View, North Beach, Golden Gate Valley, Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial, Bernal Heights, and Anza. The libraries that are adding additional hours are Visitacion Valley, Portola, Ingleside, Glen Park, Mission Bay, and Bayview/Linda Brooks-Burton.

The main library, which is on Larkin Street in downtown San Francisco, is currently open 60 hours per week. Library officials said that adding the additional opening times means all the branches will be open at least 50 hours weekly, with some opening for 55 hours.

Ed Lee, the mayor of San Francisco, said he was excited by the decision, since the main library and its branches are integral and vital components of life within the community. Children, seniors, students, and families all benefit from the materials available at the library, and increasing the opening times will give the libraries the opportunity to provide more activities and opportunities for learning to all San Francisco’s residents.

The new hours went into effect June 17. Developments like this can benefit if officials create Brochures for a Mailing to residents, noting the schedule change.
