San Francisco students clean up the beach

On May 17, approximately 600 students from seven different elementary schools in San Francisco set out to clean up Ocean Beach.

The students carried trash Bags and wore plastic gloves while they roamed over the beach, looking for trash of all kinds.

The kids, who were in second and third grade, were taking part in the ‘Kids Ocean Day Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup’ for the 24th year. For over two hours, students hunted for tin cans, Styrofoam, paper wrappers, and any other bits of garbage littering the beach. After a time, some got bored and gave up the trash pick-up effort, and went to dig holes in the sand and build sandcastles. Despite this, they learned about littering and how it harms the environment.

The event was organized by the Marine Science Institute. Tiff Murzi-Moyce revealed that most of the students had never seen the ocean, which she found amazing. Since they have never been to the beach, the children often do not understand how litter gets there.

At the end of the day, the students gathered and held up a sign reading ‘Come Together’, while an aerial photo was snapped. The kids formed a starfish, which was inspired by Natalie Kurpuis's drawing of the marine invertebrate.

Events like this can benefit if organizers work with a printing company to create Promotional Products, such as trash Bags with the schools' logos, for the participants' use.
