The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is partnering with the San Francisco Friends of the Commission on the Status of Women to sponsor ‘Work Smart’ workshops that will train women how to negotiate salaries, according to an article in the San Francisco Patch.
The Commission made the announcement recently, and added that workshops will be held throughout San Francisco during 2018, at no cost to participants.
Possibly the most difficult part of any job-seeking process is learning how to ask for a reasonable salary, and women often undervalue themselves. The workshops hope to train 20,000 women in negotiation techniques by 2020.
Katy Tang, the Supervisor of District 4 of the city, says the workshops enable people to put their “strongest foot forward,” no matter where they are in their career. Tang says it is time to eliminate the barriers that women face in the workplace, so they can earn the same pay as men.
Despite some gains, women typically make 80 cents to every dollar paid compared to a man. For women of color, the pay gap is even wider. In San Francisco in particular, women make 81 cents for every dollar men make, so the gap is smaller than the average, but still significant.
Issues like this are important to many, so organizers might consider creating Brochures about the workshops that can be mailed throughout the local area.
