San Francisco's has never had a full-service grocery—until now. Fadhl Radman, who owns Radman's Produce Market, has opened a store that features whatever produce is fresh that day.
The store has large glass doors that give potential shoppers a glimpse of what is available, and that includes a lot of organic fresh vegetables, fruits, and shelves loaded with healthy foods. Radman has just expanded the store to make room for an area that provides fresh meats.
The one thing he does not stock, though, is alcohol. That is extremely rare for the Tenderloin, which has more than 70 liquor stores within an area of one square mile.
Radman is the first grocery store owner who has chosen to work with an organization called the Healthy Corner Store Coalition, which was founded by the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC), a nonprofit organization. He does not drink, and wants to serve his neighborhood, so he joined with the Coalition to remodel his store, both inside and out. The Coalition helped by providing new shelving, as well as handling some of the marketing efforts.
TNDC's executive director, Don Falk, says he is thrilled with the work Radman has done, the food he is stocking, and the example he is setting for others in the area. Neighborhood residents are beginning to appreciate having good, fresh food available, and Radman's business is growing.
Radman might consider working with a flyer printing company to create handouts that show specials for the day or week.
