Jazz pianist coming to San Francisco
A jazz pianist, educator, and composer is coming to the Miner Auditorium in San Francisco.
Jason Moran was born and raised in Houston, Texas to Mary and Andy Moran, who encouraged their son’s interest in art and music by taking him to museums, art galleries, and the Houston Symphony. When he was six, he began learning classical piano but was attracted to jazz and hip-hop; when he heard “Round Midnight” by Thelonious Monk, jazz became his focus.
Moran attended the Manhattan School of Music, and when he was a senior, saxophonist Greg Osby invited him to join his band for a tour of Europe. After the European tour, Moran stayed with Osby’s group when they returned to the United States, and appeared on Osby’s “Further Ado” album, which was released in 1997 on the Blue Note label. Shortly after this, Blue Note signed Moran.
In 2000, Moran released the album “Facing Left,” featuring him, drummer Nasheet Waits, and bassist Tarus Mateen in a trio that became The Bandwagon. He has gone on to make numerous recordings, multimedia presentations, and performances. A review of a Bandwagon concert says:
Jason Moran will be at San Francisco’s Miner Auditorium for four nightly performances on February 6, 7, 8, and 9. Performances like this are often advertised with posters, which organizers may be able to find at print shops.

“Each band member contributed material also, giving the strong feel that this ensemble is a collective of team players.”
