A new mixed-use development is coming to San Francisco's Polk Street, but the Hemlock Tavern, a landmark, will disappear to make room for it.
Owners of Hemlock Tavern recently announced that the establishment, along with its liquor license, had been purchased by the same developers who bought their property in 2015—the Dolmen Property Group. The new owners plan to raze the tavern and build a mixed-use condo development on the site. The new building will offer 54 units and is one of a number of projects being undertaken in this area of San Francisco.
The Hemlock Tavern is 17 years old, and is not only a bar, but a venue for live music. With peanut shells on the floor, a stage in the backroom, and a patio where guests could smoke, the Hemlock was a welcoming spot where big names (think Courtney Love) sometime dropped in after doing a show at the Fillmore.
Hemlock Tavern staff said they plan to continue operating for now, and offering a complete schedule of live music through September 30. They're planning a 17th anniversary party on October 6 and will shut the door for good on October 9. They went on to thank their patrons for their support, and said that since they opened in 2001, about 15,000 live acts have performed in the venue. In a case like this, owners could work with a poster printing company to create memorial Posters for fans to purchase.
