San Francisco is getting ready for Fleet Week, which it will celebrate in October. According to a September 10 news item, military and city officials recently discussed the events that will make up the 2014 celebration.
Fleet Week has been celebrated in various U.S. cities since 1935, and is a combined effort of the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps, in which ships on active service dock in major cities for a period of one week. While they are pulled in, the ships are often open to the public for tours. Fleet Week activities can also include military demonstrations.
San Francisco has a long maritime tradition, as well as a strong connection to the military. This year, residents will be able to celebrate this by enjoying performances by the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels, as well as the Parade of Ships. Both of these highlights return after being absent from the 2013 festival.
The highlight of the week is likely to be the commissioning of the USS America; the Navy's latest amphibious assault ship. She has a crew of 1,100 and can carry as many as 1,500 marines.
The ship will be commissioned during Fleet Week, which will run October 6 to 13. Event organizers could work with a banner printing company to create sturdy, colorful Banners for use at the ships open for tours.
