Electronic music celebration coming to San Francisco for the first time

Mutek, probably best described as a loose confederation of artists working with interactive art in conjunction with electronic music and other entertainment, is bringing its first festival in the United States to San Francisco soon.

The festival started almost 20 years ago in Montreal, and can also be found in Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Mexico City. Mutek recently started up in Dubai and Tokyo.

Lovers of electronic music have followed a vibrant underground scene in San Francisco since the 1990s, but complain that the electronic music in the City by the Bay isn't getting the recognition it receives in places such as New York City. Mutek's arrival could change all that, since the event will feature local artists as well as headliners in the genre. Among those on the list of attendees are Tim Hecker, producer of ambient events, and Derrick May, long known as a pioneer in electronic music. Also on the roster are Russell E.L. Butler, a producer of club music based in Oakland; and a new trance duo known as Watkins/Peacock, featuring Zachary James Watkins, also of Oakland.

Mutek's festival includes interactive art experiences, workshops, audiovisual performances, and dance parties at nine venues throughout the Bay Area, including Bimbo's and Heron Arts. The festival takes place May 3 to 6, and details can be found on the Mutek website.

Organizes of events like this could work with a poster printing company to create Posters announcing the show, and place them throughout the area.
