Bicyclists in San Francisco have long dreamed of being able to ride across the 4.5-mile Bay Bridge, and it seems like the dreams are moving towards fruition, as engineers get ready to present plans for the bike path.
Brian Wiedenmeier, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s executive director, said that only four or five years ago, creating a bike path across the bridge seemed unlikely, as there were no plans in place and no timetable had been developed. However, Wiedenmeier said he believes things have changed recently.
Bike paths are becoming more and more popular as a method of transbay commuting. A partial trail along the Bay Bridge’s eastern span was opened in 2013, and then extended to Yerba Buena Island in 2017. Construction is currently underway on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, where a bike path is being laid out on the shoulder of the upper deck and should be open in March 2019. New constructions like this give officials a chance to consider a Logo Design for the project.
The Bay Bridge project is much more complex, and could take up to 10 years to complete. Once funding is found, it will take another three or four years to come up with preliminary designs and complete an environmental review; then two years will be needed for creating the final design, and acquiring the right-of-way. Actual construction could take another four years on top of that.
