There’s a new sports venue in San Francisco, and its recent grand opening was a night to remember, as it brought together musicians from what might be considered opposite ends of the spectrum.
In order to open Chase Center, which the Golden State Warriors will call home, heavy metal rockers Metallica teamed up with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. This is the second time the two have shared the stage; they collaborated on a concert in 1999. Since the recent evening was the 20th anniversary of that first event, it was entitled “S&M2,” meaning Symphony and Metallica, together for the second time. Approximately 16,000 people came from throughout the world to attend, with some tickets on the secondary market going for $9,000.
Metallica is James Hetfield, guitar and vocals; Kirk Hammett, guitar; Robert Trujillo, bass; and Lars Ulrich, drums. They were situated on a revolving, circular stage in the middle of the floor, with 75 orchestra members around them. Edwin Outwater was on the podium for the first part of the concert, which opened with a cover of “The Ecstasy of Gold” by Ennio Morricone before launching into “The Call of Ktulu.”
The band and orchestra gave fans a memorable musical evening that lasted a full three hours. Poster printing is often used to help promote this type of event.
