Ford GoBikes, which is currently operating the “San Francisco Yay” bike-share system in the Bay Area, is planning to add 250 electric bicycles (e-bikes) to the network in April.
The e-bikes provide assistance to riders as they pedal, reducing the effort needed to ride, particularly uphill. GenZe, which provides the vehicles used in the Scoot Networks scooter-sharing effort, will provide the bikes for San Francisco Yay. The e-bike pilot program will last one year.
When the e-bikes go into service, riders can find them using the Ford GoBike app. The e-bikes can go as fast as 18mph, making it legal for people to ride them in the bicycle lanes. The idea behind the pilot effort is to get feedback from cities in the Bay Area, to see if e-bikes can successfully become part of the GoBike network.
At the moment, GoBike has more than 2,600 bicycles available for sharing across the Bay Area, utilizing 262 stations. By the end of 2018, that number will rise to 546 stations and approximately 7,000 individual bicycles.
Alix Bockelman, the deputy executive director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, said the new e-bikes will give people in the area another option for travel in and around the city. This will reduce congestion, the cost of transportation to each individual, and improve San Francisco's quality of life, Bockelman adds.
Measures like this impact large populations, so officials could create Brochures that explain the improvements.
