In the Chinese calendar, 2018 is the Year of the Dog, and San Francisco’s canines welcomed the occasion in style—with a fancy dress parade.
A sunny Sunday in mid-February found dozens of San Francisco dog owners strolling with their furry friends at the Puppy Embarcadero Walk. Dogs and their humans covered a 1.6-mile course, with the canines ranging from a tiny Maltese called Khaleesi, to an enormous St. Bernard named Miss Elle, who weighs 130lb.
The Chinese calendar is cyclic; every twelve years the same animal is honored. Dog years included 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006, and it’s believed that people born in those years share the characteristics of the animal celebrated. Thus, dog people are thought to be loyal, honest, and good companions.
Puppy Mama, a local business, organized the walk, which started with a group photo, along with a contest. The winner would be the puppy who sat still the longest. Unfortunately, there was no clear winner, so Theresa Piasta, CEO and founder of Puppy Mama, gave up and moved on to the next contest, which would reward the dog who performed the trick the crowd liked best. There was a winner this time: Baxter, a spaniel/poodle mix, who kissed Emily Charnes, his owner.
Events like this can be even more fun if organizers work with a banner printing company to create Banners to decorate the area.
