Soldering is a basic skill used in many industries, and a workshop is coming up that will teach San Diegans how to solder.
Diane Hoffoss is the instructor for the class and a Colab director. She was the lighting artist on “Traversing Through Dust” and “The Journey Project,” both Burning Man projects. In 2018, she also created her own installation for Burning Man. There were more than 16,000 LEDs on the project, which she called “Unfolding Humanity.”
The class begins with a 30-minute demonstration, which will introduce the various types of equipment and their purposes, and discuss safety. Good soldering techniques will be demonstrated, as will poor ones, so students can learn the difference which will help them judge their own work.
Following the demonstration, students will have 30 minutes to practice, where they will solder joints using both the surface mount and through-hole techniques. Instructors will be on hand to provide coaching, check the students’ work, and help them troubleshoot.
The final part of the class is a 90-minute session during which students will make an LED pendant of their own, which they can take home. Informational or instructional sheets can be created by the organizers of such events with flyer printing.
There are no prerequisites for the class, which is open to solderers of every level. However, if students have soldering equipment, they should bring it. Soldering Basics will be held at Colab on Fairmount Avenue in San Diego on January 16, from 1.00 pm until 4.00 pm.
