One of the most successful rock bands of all time is on its way to San Diego, where fans are sure to have a great time.
The Doobie Brothers, with various members comprising the band, have been active in rock music for nearly 50 years. The band formed in California late in the 1960s, when John Hartman, a drummer, and Tom Johnston, a vocalist and guitarist, were in a band named Pud, which was heavily influenced by Moby Grape. When Pud broke up, Hartman and Johnston joined up with guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren, forming the original Doobie Brothers.
A review of a recent concert reveals the band is still in top form. Appearing with Santana in Kansas City, the Doobies performed a set that lasted 75 minutes, and included classics including “Rockin' Down the Highway,” from their first hit album “Toulouse Street.” Founding member Tom Johnston was on the stage and in great form vocally, as was another founder, Patrick Simmons. Reviews noted that they made the songs, which they have sung hundreds of times, sound fresh and new, and the audience responded enthusiastically. Their encore numbers were “Listen to the Music” and “Black Water.” Poster printing is often used to publicize events like this when they take place.
The Doobies will appear at 7:30 pm next Tuesday, September 17, at Humphreys by the Bay on Shelter Island. Tickets are on sale now.
