Military families get to visit San Diego museums for free

A number of museums in and near San Diego are offering free admission to military families this summer.

The National Endowment for the Arts recently announced that the Visions Art Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego History Center, and the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum will all be open free of charge to members of the military.

The Visions Art Museum displays textiles and contemporary quilts, and provides a place for textile artists from throughout the world to display their art. The San Diego Museum of Art is in Balboa Park, and first opened its doors in 1926. It is home to a large collection with an emphasis on Spanish art, and welcomes about 500,000 visitors every year.

The San Diego History Center is also in Balboa Park, and presents interactive exhibits that families can enjoy as they learn the history of the city and the region. The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum features both exhibits and events that allow visitors to explore Chinese culture. Institutions can use banner printing to welcome military families.

Active duty service personnel, members of the reserve, and National Guard personnel, and as many as five members of their families, are eligible to enjoy their visits free. Museums throughout the country, the Department of Defense, and Blue Star Families, along with the National Endowment for the Arts, collaborated on the program, which began last year.

The free admission period begins May 18, and goes through September 2.
